How to make the perfect cup of Matcha
Making a delicious cup of matcha at home is easier than you think. With the right technique and just a few minutes of your time, you can enjoy a smooth, creamy matcha every day.
What You'll Need
- 2–3 grams of ceremonial-grade matcha
- 70–100 ml of water heated to approximately 80°C (175°F)
- A bamboo whisk (chasen)
- A matcha bowl
- A bamboo scoop (chashaku) or a teaspoon
Step 1: Add the Matcha
Place 2–3 grams of ceremonial-grade matcha into your matcha bowl.
Step 2: Make a smooth paste
Add a small splash of hot water, just enough to cover the matcha. Use your bamboo whisk to mix it into a smooth, lump-free paste.
Step 3: Add the remaining water and whisk
Pour in the remaining hot water (80°C / 175°F). Whisk vigorously in a fast "M" or "W" motion until a smooth layer of fine foam forms on the surface. This usually takes around 15–20 seconds.
Step 4: Enjoy
Your matcha is ready to drink! Enjoy it on its own for a rich, authentic flavor, or top it up with steamed milk or your favorite plant-based alternative for a creamy matcha latte.
Tips for the Best Matcha
- Use water at around 80°C (175°F), not boiling, to preserve the delicate flavor.
- Start by making a paste to ensure a smooth, lump-free matcha.
- Whisk quickly rather than stirring slowly to create a creamy froth.
- Always choose high-quality ceremonial-grade matcha for the best taste and experience.
